Full course description

"You-MD" is a required training for all incoming first year and transfer students at the University of Maryland, which covers foundational prevention education for alcohol and opioid misuse prevention.

This course is self-paced, and designed to be completed within approximately 90 minutes.  There are five modules in the course, and each module concludes with a short assessment to reinforce important learning outcomes.

  • Module 1: You, the Human discusses the physiological impacts of alcohol and opioid misuse.
  • Module 2: You, the Student discusses the impacts of alcohol and opioid misuse on brain development and academic performance.
  • Module 3: You, the Community Member discusses the laws and policies students need to know regarding substance use at the University of Maryland.
  • Module 4: You, the Help-Seeker discusses seeking support for substance use-related concerns, including getting help in medical emergencies, seeking treatment for harmful substance use (including addiction), and how to help a friend who may be navigating substance use-related challenges.
  • Module 5: You, the Terp discusses the many ways to have fun, make new connections, and find your community at the University of Maryland, without using alcohol or other drugs.

The Drug Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989 and the Start Talking Maryland Act of 2017 require all college students to receive this foundational education on alcohol and opioids, respectively. As such, this training is mandatory for all incoming first-year and transfer students and must be completed by the posted deadline, or students could face disciplinary action.
